BWL’s Summer Time Markets 2011

Summer has arrived and along with it, the Farmers’ Market Season. This year, BWL and partner The Boar and Chick will be at a number of Farmers’ Markets in the Hamilton and surrounding area. Here’s a list:

Hamilton Farmers’ Market – Every Thurs, Fri and Sat. (Year round)
Dundas Market – Every Thursday afternoon. (Starting June 16th)
Milton Market – Every Saturday morning (except June 4th)
Aberfoyle Market – Every Saturday morning.

We are also running the Aberfoyle Café at the Aberfoyle Farmer’s Market. Every week we will feature our own products along with other local farm produce on our menu. Culinary students from the area will be on hand to prepare these tasty meals.

Whenever you can, visit your local farm market and support farms that produce good food that is grown and raised in your community.

Life is certainly an adventure!

BWL Salutes Family Member Jerry Huiskamp

I’d like to give a big shout out to Jerry Huiskamp today. On Monday, April 18th, Jerry completed the Boston Marathon – and in darn decent time too. Considering he is enjoying life at the tender age of 57, this has to be a tremendous personal achievement for him and one that I find very inspiring. That his wife Jane and son Jeremy have become long distance runners in recent years makes this story even more intriguing. Jerry and Jane both completed the Hamilton ON “Around The Bay Road Race” in March and Jerry used this event as final preparation for the coveted race in Boston.

Jerry and Jane have both said that they feel better now than at any other time in their lives. Young people can take heart that life can be just as good in your 50′s as it can be in formative years.

Congratulations to Jerry on his completion of the Boston Marathon and to Jerry, Jane and Jeremy for their recent long distance running successes.

Eat Local Hamilton’s Visit To BWL Saturday Feb 26 2011

Thanks to everyone who came out to our tour on Saturday Feb 26th!

Here’s some feedback from the organizers (thanks to Juby Lee):

People came because they wanted to meet the farmer.

There were requests for more livestock farm visits.

A few wrote about your partnership with Mark and Tania (of the Boar and Chick)

People were delighted with the sheep demonstration (please thank Kim as well).

Some folks LOVED being able to hold the little lambs.

And many wrote that they appreciated being able to talk with all of you.

From Rural Routes… Saturday Feb 26th – 10:30am – RURAL ROUTES @ Black Walnut Lane Farm. Join us for a rugged outdoor adventure at the height of lambing season! The bus will depart @ 10:30am sharp from the Bread & Roses Café (27 King William Street) on Saturday February 26 (where you can buy advance tickets to avoid disappointment, since last year’s trips sold out!) and the bus returns to the Hamilton Farmers Market at 12:30. Tickets include the bus trips and delicious samples of Black Walnut Lane lamb products: $10 for adults, $8 for seniors and $6 for kids. Presented by Hamilton Eat Local and Smart Commute.

Local Farm Food Worth The Premium

Our farm sells to a sector of the population in the GTA and South Western Ontario who value quality food and are prepared to pay for that quality. The people who I’m referring to are always on the lookout for fresh fruit & vegetables, baked goods or meat products that have been carefully prepared and/or raised with care. Once you have tasted quality food, it’s easy to understand why products purchased direct from your local farm are worth the premium and worth the time it takes to seek them out.

At Black Walnut Lane Farm (BWL), we raise and sell vacuum packed lamb, beef, wild boar and bison – all available for our customers at our farm outlet on Saturdays. We also sell to restaurants who value quality and wish to tell their patrons the origins of their menu selections. The resurgence of small local Farmer’s Markets in recent years have been a help visa-vis the sustainability of our operation; and beginning in mid-January 2011, our new stall opens in the Hamilton Farmer’s Market with all our product, plus new ready-to-eat prepared foods! Our farm outlet will be open on Saturday mornings (9am-1pm) this fall and the coming winter of 2011.

Should you decide to visit us, you’ll be able to tour the farm itself and see how the animals are cared for. If you like, you can help us feed the sheep and you can check out and take pictures of our llamas. You might be lucky enough to see some live births too. Be sure to tell your friends and family to come out and experience our farm!

As we move forward, I hope to share some of our farm stories and experiences from Black Walnut Lane Farm – as well as introducing you to some of our partners and friends who make this small enterprise possible. We value our customers and all our partners associated with BWL . Be sure to send me any farm related questions you might have and I’ll do my best to answer them.
